We’re fortunate to be perfectly situated in Edinburgh’s elegant New Town, just moments from the city centre and the historic charm of the Old Town.
Our reception is open during the day to answer any guest enquiries.
It all began in 1810...
When architect Hugh Cairncross designed a layout for the expansion of the New Town. This development began in the late 18th century and was in response to overcrowding in the medieval Old Town. Our building, constructed around 1820, is surrounded by late Georgian architecture close to the city Centre, yet in a quiet residential cobbled street.

The Broughton Townhouse is an independent family-run hotel, owned by my wife Susan and I, (pictured here with our twin boys Theo and Dexter), and managed by Karyn. We bought this little gem in 2024 as an antidote to the chain hotels that now dominate Edinburgh’s city centre.
We can’t wait to welcome you and are happy to share tips on the city’s highlights.

Our hotel, named “Little Joe” in the movie, was featured in the 2010 animated film The Illusionist directed by the feted French film auteur, Sylvain Chomet.
It went on to win a Cesar award and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for best animated feature in 2011.

The Broughton Townhouse is nestled in a peaceful street within the vibrant heart of Broughton, a charming area known for its warm atmosphere and rich history. Broughton boasts an eclectic mix of independent shops, cosy cafes and trendy bars. Our neighbourhood offers guests a perfect blend of local character and urban convenience.
We are the perfect base for those looking to explore the city, the Highlands and the scenery across our beautiful country. The world famous links golf courses of East Lothian are a 45 minute drive to the east along the coast of the Forth.
We have private, although limited parking of one or two spaces,(to be reserved and paid for in advance).

Edinburgh's favourite Attractions Just Steps Away
The Broughton Townhouse is perfectly situated for exploring Edinburgh’s iconic landmarks and shopping destinations. Princes St and Waverley Train Station are just a short stroll away, whilst the most convenient tram stop from the airport is located at Picardy Place, only a two minute walk downhill to our hotel.
A 25-minute walk will take you to the world-famous Edinburgh Castle, while the Royal Mile, the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, is only 15 minutes on foot. Here you can amble down to the bottom of the Royal Mile where you can discover the delight of Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the monarch in Scotland.
And for an architectural contrast, sitting opposite the palace is the Enric Miralles designed Scottish Parliament building finished in 2004.
An array of fantastic restaurants to suit all tastes, and luxury shopping are to be found close to us.
For those wishing to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia, it’s a quick 15-minute tram ride to Leith, Edinburgh’s old port district, which is worthy of an afternoon’s sightseeing.
